Microsoft Project Server 2002 is the new server product in the Microsoft Project family (replaces Microsoft Project Central Server). Used in conjunction with Microsoft Project, Microsoft Project Server* provides a central repository to publish project and resource information, thereby enabling organizations to store data consistently, so reporting is up to date and meaningful. Microsoft Project Server offers enterprise scale, security and performance capabilities to address organizations' evolving project and resource management demands.
Microsoft Project Server enables project teams to collaborate, access and update project information through its Web portal, called Microsoft Project Web Access. Using the services of Microsoft Project Server through Microsoft Project Web Access requires a Microsoft Project Server Client Access (CAL).
A member of the .NET Enterprise Server family, Microsoft Project Server serves as the foundation for workgroup collaboration and enterprise project management. Microsoft Project Server provides organizations with a scalable extensible technology platform that they can use to securely develop and integrate their project management practices with their current and future business systems.
* Microsoft Project Server requires Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or included MSDE for back-end data storage. (Microsoft SQL Server 2000 required for enterprise project management; Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (included with Microsoft SQL Server) required for OLAP reporting.) Microsoft Project Server includes SharePoint Team Services for workgroup collaboration. Microsoft Office XP license required for administrators for full interactivity of Office Web Components in order to create Portfolio Analyzer views in Microsoft Project Web Access. |

What's New:
Enterprise custom fields and codes*:
Project administrators can define standards for custom fields - using formulas, outline codes and pick lists (e.g., skill codes) - for projects and resources. Project management efforts can be tailored to the specific processes of the organizations. By applying standards, administrators ensure consistent, accurate and complete cross-project and resource reports.

Microsoft Project Server compatibility:
Microsoft Project Server can also be implemented as the companion server product to Microsoft Project 2000. This compatibility helps organizations more easily transition from Microsoft Project 2000 to Microsoft Project 2002 by eliminating the need to upgrade the server and the client at the same time.
Integration with Microsoft SharePoint Team Services:
Integration of SharePoint Team Services with Microsoft Project Server provides an out-of-the-box solution for document sharing and issue tracking on projects. Each time a new project is published to Microsoft Project Server, a SharePoint Team Services subweb is automatically created, allowing users to centrally store and organize project-related documents and track issues through Microsoft Project Web Access*, the Microsoft Project Server Web interface.

Enterprise standards:
Organizations can store and share standardized data that are common to all projects - including base calendars, views and enterprise fields - through the Global Enterprise Template, so reporting is consistent across the project portfolio.
Enterprise templates*:
Organizations can drive adoption of their best practices and procedures through Enterprise Templates. Since the Enterprise Templates are stored centrally on a Microsoft Project Server and managed by the administrator, they can be made available to the entire organization and monitored for standardized project planning.

Enterprise resources:
The enterprise resource pool provides a central location where resource information is securely stored and managed, so project and resource mangers can get accurate, up-to-date information about resources, including assignments, skills, usage and availability across the organization. |
