What's an Academic version?

Software produced for:

  • Educational Institutions
  • Administrative Offices & Boards of Education
  • Public Libraries
  • Public Museums
  • Hospitals, Healthcare Systems and Research Laboratories which wholly owned and operated by a qualified Educational Institution
What's CAL?
CAL stands for “Client Access License”. These grant the right for a computer to have access to the server. (This is different than an operating system or workstation license which grants you the right to have an operating system running on your system.)
What's COA?
COA stands for Certificate of Authenticity. It's a document or hologram that is difficult to copy and confirms that the product is genuine.
What a competitive upgrade?
It is an upgrade for users of competing products from other manufacturers. It usually also allows upgrades from previous versions of the same product.
What's DSP?
DSP stands for “Delivery Service Partner”. DSP software is similar to OEM software, but DSP is more generic and normally would have no manufacturer’s name stamped on the manual or printed on the license. Like OEM versions, DSP versions contain the same program as the Retail Box version. They also do not come in fancy packaging materials and there is no technical support provided by the software manufacturer resulting in much lower prices. DSP versions often come with only an electronic help manual, which is built-in to the software or a small getting-started manual. Some software manufacturers/copyright holders require that hardware be purchased with their OEM or DSP products or to be distributed with New PC. Our company does not have affiliations or agreements with any of these manufacturers/copyright holders. The End User License Agreement is a contract between the user of the software/hardware item and the manufacturer/copyright holder of the software or hardware product. By purchasing OEM items from our company, you have agreed to comply with all of the terms of the End User License Agreement and have purchased or intend to purchase the qualifying hardware or items required, and you hold our company harmless for any damages or violations of this agreement.
What's OEM?
OEM stands for “Original Equipment Manufacturer”. OEM software contains the same program as the Retail Box version. They however do not come in fancy packaging materials as their retail counterparts, and there is no technical support provided by the software manufacturer, hence the lower prices for OEM versions. Some software manufacturers/copyright holders require that hardware be purchased with their OEM products or to be distributed with New PC. Beginning in September 2005, there will be a new simplified license for Microsoft OEM system builder software and hardware. If you distribute a system builder pack unopened, you are no longer required to sell it with any non-peripheral piece of hardware. Plus, there will be a new system builder-specific Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label to help differentiate system builder software from other OEM license types.
What's NFR?
NFR stands for “Not For Resale”. Purchasers are asked not to resell the package. These are generally not eligible for upgrades and may not include tech support. This software version is the same in function and packaging as the retail software of the same version.
What's direct packaging?
Instead of the colorful packaging used in retail sales, some software vendors package the software product in plain (white or brown) box when selling and shipping directly to customers. The product is identical in contents and licensing as the retail packages.
What's an eManual?
eManual stands for Electronic Manual or Online Manual, which means that the software items do not come with hard copy manuals. After the software installation, your entire electronic manual can be find at the "Help" section on the top of the tool bar. Electronic Manual contains a complete index, searchable index, and sections. Items have eManuals that usually are shipped in CD-ROMs without retail boxes nor hard copy manuals to manufacturers and distributors in order to keep the production cost down.
What does no media mean?
No CD or floppy disks are included. These are generally for volume client access items.
What's the difference between an update and an upgrade?
An update is a revision to a software by means of patches i.e. Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE (second edition). An upgrade takes you from one version to another i.e. Windows 95 to Windows 98.
What's OLP?
Microsoft Open Licensing Program was designed for small to midsized organizations to purchase Microsoft software at discount prices with a minimum initial purchase of five software licenses. Benefits of Open License include, discounts off the retail price of software, the ability to track and manage licenses by using online tools, and the rights to create a standard image and deploy it on multiple machines, and rights to transfer licenses from one machine to another. Acquiring additional software products through Open License may be made in any quantity, at any time during a two-year period, giving customers the flexibility to deploy what they want when they want it.
